The Cheerleader by LazyDugong The Cheerleader by LazyDugong
Boxer Crab (or Pom Pom Crab!)
Lybia tessellata

This crab had the idea to keep in his arms two small stinging anemones, for his protection. The result is very funny: you should see him moving those anemones, when feeling in danger. Exactly as a cheerleader! :)

Size: 2 cm

Lens: 100 mm macro
Strobe: Inon Z22

I just love these things. An animal that uses anemones as pom poms, what doesn't the ocean have in it! Great photo!

I have a bunch of these in my aquarium, they are really neat! When I first got one of my gobies, it tried to get in the cave where one of the pom pom crabs lived, and the crab punched it in the face with its anemone! The goby never did it again.

Let me ask you something. The anemones are grow there?

Good question! Anemones are alive and so they feed and grow. I don't know which species of anemones they are and how big they can grow. I've seen some very tiny juveniles and they already had their protecting anemones in their claws. It's amazing how they can find the right size to collect and how they live always keeping those anemones in their small claws, without damaging them.
This is not the first crab to surprise me! :)

Yes, very often I've been surprised by crabs. It seems they have a special attitude for unusual symbioses with all kind of organisms. While other species choose to have anemones growing on their backs, this one prefers to keep anemones in his claws. Once I saw few of them very small, too small for a photo, even with my 100mm macro lens. And they had already tiny anemones in their claws. Really nice to see! :)

I'm very happy that so many people realize how weird this crab is. Marine life is a world apart which deserves a better knowledge and respect.

Sure is ! It's threatened enough by us, but when we encounter people with this beauty, just like you do, it can be mind-changing, it will take years and years but now the realization is coming :-) I know the same thing with the nature reserves here in Flanders and other ecological issues.

Yes, it's very unusual. Hard to find, because it hides under small stones, in a very shallow water, where nobody stop and look or spend time searching under the stones. But to find one of this crab is a great satisfaction! :)

I'm glad you got to find one, that must be very exciting! :) he's such a cute little guy! Never expected to see a crab with anemones for "hands". I'd probably be jumping around with joy if I saw one of those haha!

Is very REAL! Nature has no limits in fantasy! :)

I know it can look scary, but believe me, it's very funny and too small to be scary! Its claws, made to keep those anemones, are very small too, can't be of any danger for us.
Cheerleaders are never scary! :D

oh, I don't know about that, I find most cheerleaders akin to plastic barbie doll robot aliens trying to take over the world :paranoid: Amazing, though, that you got the pic just when old mr. crab got the groove. :D

Well, no comment about cheerleaders. :)

I found mr. Crab under a stone. I had to carefully turn few of them, before finding him (and a female with eggs, maybe next photo to be uploaded). He tried to run away, so I had to focus and shoot quickly: I was very excited, after years looking for this encounter. :)

Maybe he was angry, I found him resting under a small stone, at night! His eyes are very strange, it seems they have the "S" of Superman under them.

It's a rare species, not easy to find. I don't know where he can find such a small anemones and how he keeps them so small, like a bonsai. Just another case of smart symbioses: the small crab get protection, the anemones get their food filtering the water, while brought around by the crab. :)

Don't be scared, he's very small! :)

This species is very rare, can be found only in few places, but you have to look under some small stones, one by one and be patient and lucky enough to find one of them.
